Joseph Wadsworth Writes To NSHS Students

20 March 2012

Hello:

Custom Source Woodworking, Inc. has partnered with North Salem High School to provide a unique opportunity for students interested in pursing a career in woodworking. Due to the snow days, Mr. Mattson was unable to remind his students about the after-school meeting presented by CSW; as a result, many of you unfortunately were not able to attend the presentation and hear about our company. This letter provides you with an outline of our vision for the North Salem-CSW initiative, and will also explain more about our firm.

OUR COMPANY, OUR MISSION

CSW is a commercial woodworking firm in the state of Washington, founded in 2007 by Jim Mammina and me. Collectively, we have over 50 years of experience in the industry. With our commitment to old world craftsmanship using cutting-edge technology, CSW has not only survived, but also thrived, during the current economic environment. We are seeking to expand our business and become a leading woodworking business in the region.

To expand, we need whip-smart employees who can thrive in the fast-paced environment at CSW. Our goal is to find and train self-starters who are proud to call themselves professional woodworkers. We want to hire employees who care about CSW and work hard to succeed along with the company. And we believe that North Salem High School’s Woodshop program has just the people we are looking for.

WHY NORTH SALEM HIGH SCHOOL?

First, Mr. Mattson’s woodshop class. Mr. Mattson is an inspiring teacher, who is focused on teaching his students real life skills and a diligent work ethic. I believe in what he is teaching. In order for CSW to continue to grow and succeed, I am seeking motivated, focused, skilled employees with high integrity. Mr. Mattson’s woodshop program is unparalleled in the region, and he teaches his students to be true industry professionals.

Second, the North Salem students. From day one, I have been truly impressed by the responsible and respectful attitudes of the students I’ve met. The young people enrolled in the North Salem High School Woodshop program are highly talented students. Over 30 of them have contacted me in an effort to learn more about the ways they can practice and improve their woodworking abilities. They have a natural aptitude for craftsmanship, but are not willing to rely on their talent alone – they want to excel. North Salem students are driven, and I hope to provide them with an opportunity to succeed.

PASSION FOR WODWORKING

Your students take pride in what they accomplish in Woodshop class. I am sure as your students have talked about woodshop at the dinner table you have noticed their enthusiasm  and passion. North Salem students love woodworking and are proud of it. You would be hard pressed to find a group of students more proud of their school’s shop and its accomplishments.
LOCATION
Our company is located in Olympia, Washington, about 3 hours away from Salem. The distance is the same as a college away from home: close enough to visit on the weekend, but further away from distractions.

EXPERIENCE & OPPORTUNITY

Your students have work experience. In Mr. Mattson’s class, they work toward goals. They work with procedures and deadlines. They work as a team, and they accomplish what any woodworking professional would perform the normal course of business. More importantly, they have not been exposed to poor training and bad work environments. A position at CSW offers the chance to gain valuable experience in the industry with a first-rate company.

More information about our company can be found on our website, www.csw.co. We also welcome you to schedule a visit with your student to our shop. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and consider this opportunity for your student. I look forward to meeting with you. In the meantime, I will be happy to answer any questions via email at joe@csw.co.

Thank you,

North Salem High School Student Recruit Program

16 March 2012

Dear Mr. Wadsworth,

My name is John Honey and I am the former principal at North Salem High School.  I was fortunate to first work with and later supervise Dave Anderson, the longtime shop teacher at North.

As Dave prepared to retire, he worked diligently to find a suitable replacement who could take our school's program to the next level.  When he introduced me to Dean Mattson, it was evident that we had found the right guy for the job.  Now nearly three years later, I have been doubly blessed to have been  given the opportunity to work alongside Dean and  now you are wisely supporting and utilizing the great resource Dean and Dave have established.

While I am no longer the principal at North Salem High School, I wanted to personally thank you for recognizing and supporting this program.  I believe that the woodworking industry is an integral part of the economic success of the Pacific Northwest.  Dean's instruction and commitment to students, along with your professional and financial commitments and contributions to our students and the industry, go hand-in hand in developing  the cornerstone to the successful life sought by our students.

You and Dean are helping break the cycle of poverty and hopelessness experienced by many under-represented or disenfranchised students.  Instead, you are helping create a new generation of employees who expect, demonstrate and live a life of hard work, honest reward and continuous development.  Best of all, you recognize that what is good for our students today is also good for the industry and your company tomorrow.  That is a beautiful partnership.

Thanks for your support of our students and your confidence in Dean's instructional talent.  I am certain that you will not be disappointed by either.

I look forward to meeting you in person sometime.

Kindest regards,

John Honey

Jim,

Things look great. These guys are awesome!! Do very good work. We've had to work around plumbers and electricians, and they have stayed positive and worked around us. Wouldn't hesitate to have them on a job with me again.

Thanks,

Hi Jim,

I was so happy you and Katie came out to see the project. We are so appreciative of your involvement in the new museum. I hope it will feel rewarding to CSW and that it is something that you all feel good about. This truly is a community build project in every sense of the word!

Jim,

Attached are our bid request docs on a small project called HAPO Yakima that delivers around the first week of January. Just so you know I am required to get competing bids on everything I do, but I really hope to work with you guys again.

The GPCU project has been very successful thus far.  We will finish the casework installation this week.  The quality of everything you produced has been excellent.  The casework details have been correct (size, color, type, lables, etc…) and the boxes are dead square.  We loaded and unloaded with what looks like zero damage.  I’ll send photos in a few weeks when I return to site for punch.

Thanks,

"By the way, I just wanted to let you know, these were some of the best casework shop drawings I've seen.  You will not believe the drawings some companies submit.  Your drawings were so clear and accurate; it was refreshing..."

"Your casework looks great. Even more importantly – my superintendent in charge of the TI was VERY impressed with the quality of work and bar-coding/wrapping/protection of the casework when it arrived – and he’s not easy to impress!"

"Having worked with CSW on multiple projects I can attest first hand that the quality product(s) they provide are among the best in today's market place. This together with the timely delivery and proactive management that the people of CSW provide CSW represents a winning solution for Kassel. Suffice it to say we recommend CSW highly."

"Well, coincidentally, CSW happens to be the only one I am calling for this one. The owner has a rather exclusive list of approved Subcontractors, but none for casework. They asked that we only invite trusted subs, and through my experience with your bids, and through our Superintendent’s experience, CSW is my choice. As always, I appreciate your help."
